People at Schenck Process

Sascha Linke
Sascha Linke trained as a Mechatronics Engineer at Schenck Process between 2001 and 2005 and now works as a Mechatronics Engineer in Weighfeeder Assembly.

Sascha Linke has kindly agreed to answer some questions

SP: Did your training have any particular requirements? Did you need any special skills?
SL: The training is a mixture of electronics and mechanics, so you need to be interested in manual work as well as electronics and mechanics. You learn a lot of specialist theory during the training period.
In the practical element, you shouldn't be afraid of picking up a file and getting the odd scratch.

SP: What was the training like in general and what did you like about it in particular?
SL: We were taught the principles in the first year and undertook practical work in the apprentice workshop. I especially enjoyed working with colleagues in the Assembly Department. I learnt a lot simply by watching. I had a sense of belonging and you feel proud when a machine that you've helped build is sold.

SP: What do people expect of Mechatronics Engineers once they've completed their training?
SL: You're expected to apply what you learnt during your training and of course deliver what the customer expects. You need to be a team player and be able to fit in a group.

SP: What do you like about your job?
SL: I currently work with weighfeeders. I use a test report to check the mechanics and electronics of the machines. The machine is only delivered to the customer once I've done this. The work is very diverse. Even though the test procedure is carried out according to the same principle, there's always something new. You have a great deal of responsibility, because you know that missing a small error can have a major effect.

SP: What do you think of Schenck Process as an employer?
SL: The training period at Schenck Process was fantastic and I was initially given a fixed-term contract. The only thing I didn't like was that once my fixed-term contract came to an end, I had to do my military service. Unfortunately, the company couldn't give me an assurance that I'd get a job once I had completed my military service, which was a shame. But because I was in the volunteer fire department, I was discharged and received a permanent contract after my fixed-term contract. Schenck Process is a good employer. I have always received my pay on time, my colleagues are nice and we were the Hessen Champion in 2008.

SP: Do you have any tips for young people about to embark on working life?
SL: In my case, my godfather worked here and was able to explain everything about this job. It is also important to work hard in vocational school. I didn't enjoy that bit much, and I was always happy to be back at work, but school is important. And if you have a question, you should ask it, even if it's a bit embarrassing. Punctuality is also important, while we have flexible working hours, we arrange times with colleagues and then have to stick to them.

SP: What do you do outside of work? Do you have any hobbies?
SL: I'm in the volunteer fire department and I like going fishing.
